Gnoris: A File Backup/Access Server and Network Camera Management System

Gnoris is one of the first applications developed and hosted on QuICK. It enables you to create your own personal cloud, allowing you to backup your digital files and access them from anywhere. Digital files may include documents, photos, videos and any other data that are typically scattered across many of your devices. Additionally, Gnoris also allows for the management of certain types of computer network attached cameras. Specifically, Gnoris can be configured to tap IP cameras on your Local Area Network (LAN) that are capable of broadcasting video streams using the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP). It can then redirect those streams into 24/7 recordings on designated local drives. Our motion-detection software can detect and forward motion activated alerts to your mobile device as well.

Creating your private cloud with Gnoris

Backup harddrive, SSD, photos, videos, all data

With Gnoris you can create your own private cloud. This starts by selecting a personal computer (desktop/laptop) with sufficient storage space and continuous access to the internet. The storage space, which can be any locally accessible drive (or drives for redundancy), acts as a central repository of all your data. A reliable internet connection allows access to this central repository from all your devices. Once selected, to create the private cloud download and install QuICK on that computer, and then install Gnoris from within the QuICK application browser. A few simple configuration steps as detailed in the installation guide will then allow you to get your personal cloud running. Some of the unique features of Gnoris Cloud are:

End-to-end encryption and file encryption

Gnoris uses state of the art TLS encryption to transfer files between your devices. Whether your backup or file access occurs on a private or a public network, data transmission is always encrypted end-to-end. Another security option available during backup is the ability to encrypt files using a passphrase prior to storage.

Backup redundancy

You can add multiple locally accessible storage devices like internal, external or networked Hard Disk Drives (HDD) or Solid State Drives (SSD) to your Gnoris Cloud. Each of these will act as a redundant repository site.

File de-duplication

Often times the same files are present on multiple devices. For instance photos shared on a family chat room and downloaded by all family members means each family member has the exact same copy of the photo on their device. Gnoris can recognize the duplication and efficiently backup only a single copy per storage site. De-duplication is restricted to un-encrypted files only. Document-versioning is another feature of Gnoris that is currently in the pipeline.

Prioritized alerts

By monitoring the connected network cameras, Gnoris provides motion-based alerts that are categorized automatically into priority levels using our proprietary software. You may choose to receive the alerts on your client devices based on priority levels. Alerts and alarms depend on the context, the definition of which may vary from person to person or situation to situation. Some user controls are provided to customize this feature.
In addition, Gnoris provides status notifications related to storage capacity usage, drive failures, and other relevant information.

Reclaiming storage space

Each 1080p resolution camera recording continuously (24/7) at 30 frames-per-second can generate approximately 25GB of data per day. A 4k resolution camera will generate approximately 4x more data. By default, Gnoris deletes the oldest data to make room for newer recordings. Other priority-based deletion options are also available.

Connecting devices to Gnoris Cloud for automatic backup

Automatic backup of all your devices begins with connecting each remote device to Gnoris Cloud. While the Gnoris Cloud sits at a fixed location in your home/office, the connecting device can be a mobile phone or a laptop on the move. Install a desktop or mobile version of QuICK on each of those connecting devices, to start the process. A simple device discovery initiated by you from your Gnoris Cloud allows the devices to be tethered to it. Mobile devices or personal computers of all family members (or team members) can be similarly added and configured individually for backup. Devices that are currently being backed up by other services can also be additionally handled by your Gnoris Cloud.

Connecting network cameras to Gnoris Cloud

A network camera can be added to Gnoris Cloud using its RTSP URL. In most cases the Gnoris server and the url have to be on the same network not separated by a firewall. The security cameras may be wired or wireless. Any number of cameras can be added to Gnoris, with a few variables dictating the maximum number of cameras that can be attached. These variables range from the processing power of your Gnoris Server to available storage. Ideally, you may want to maintain a 1:1 between the number of cameras and the hardware concurrency your computer can offer.

Backing up files from your client devices

Once your devices are tethered to your Gnoris Cloud, they will receive a Gnoris Backup Manager tool on the QuICK client app. Use this to add directories from your device that you wish to backup. The backup manager will now collate and upload the files to Gnoris cloud. A snapshot of your repository with its files and directories and individual storage utilizations is then available on the client app. Thumbnails of photos and videos are also available for convenient browsing. You can verify if a particular file or entire folder has been backed up by using the repo view feature. You may also select the frequency of backup. None of your files pass through our servers so we do not see or keep a copy of your data.

Receiving alerts for network cameras

Motion-activated alerts received from Gnoris Cloud are organized in an event organizer in your QuICK client app. The event organizer allows you to browse and view latest alerts or pull up your video feed from an earlier date. A calendar interface in the app allows you to pull up the previously received alerts.
